NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has given his full support to US President Donald Trump's campaign to pressure Russia to end its war against Ukraine.

Rutte, in an interview with Bloomberg on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, noted that Trump's threat to introduce additional economic sanctions against Russia is the right strategy.

Donald Trump has said he will ensure a quick end to Russia's war against Ukraine, but has not yet explained how he will do so. He is due to address the World Economic Forum in Davos via video link later Thursday.

While refusing to discuss the details of any future deal to end the fighting, Rutte drew a link between Putin's war and China, portraying Beijing as part of an "axis" including North Korea, Iran and Russia.

"This is not a conflict between Russia and Ukraine or Russia and Europe. This is a geopolitical issue over North Korea, China, Iran, and that is why we need to make a good deal," Rutte said. "A good deal means that Putin does not slap Kim Jong-un, Xi Jinping and the mullahs in Iran."
