President Vladimir Zelensky signed a law on the introduction of the institution of parole for persons from serving their sentences for their direct participation in the defense of the country, the protection of its independence and territorial integrity.
According to the law card No. 11079-1 on the Verkhovna Rada website, the document was signed on May 17.
On May 8, 279 people’s deputies voted for the law.
The law was developed to determine the legal and organizational basis for recruiting into military service citizens who have been sentenced for committing crimes through restriction of freedom or imprisonment.
During mobilization and/or martial law, persons serving a sentence in the form of restriction of freedom or imprisonment may be subject to conditional early dismissal by the court to perform military service under a contract.
Conditional early dismissal for military service under a contract can be applied by the court if the convicted person has expressed a desire to perform military service under a contract and meets the requirements for military service.
It also establishes liability for evasion of military service by such persons – imprisonment for a term of 5 to 10 years.
Persons involved in terrorist acts, terrorist financing, as well as persons convicted of violating road safety rules or operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which led to an accident with the death of another person, as well as citizens who have been convicted will not be fired. for committing the premeditated murder of two or more persons, or involving rape or sexual violence, and persons who have committed particularly serious corruption offences.
It is expected that the adoption of the law will create additional opportunities for recruiting the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations, as well as provide additional motivation to persons convicted of crimes to correct themselves and fulfill their duties to repel armed aggression against Ukraine.
