Polish authorities are increasing security around the main transit hub for foreign military aid to Ukraine amid concerns about Russian-backed sabotage operations.

Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said authorities were taking measures to tighten security around Rzeszow-Jasionka airport, which handles up to 90% of Western cargo heading to the front lines in Ukraine.

“We are faced with a foreign state that is conducting hostile and, in military terms, dynamic actions on the territory of Poland. Nothing like this has ever happened before,” he said.

Semonyak also noted that the recent sabotage attacks were ordered by Russian military intelligence (GRU), adding that similar methods are being used throughout Europe.

He said they usually involve the recruitment of so-called “disposable agents”, such as football hooligans or organized crime gangs, who are willing to carry out such acts for money.

The official called it a “very serious situation” because Russian intelligence services are now operating much more deliberately on foreign soil.

“We are no longer talking about agents of influence or some kind of online activity. These are individuals who are ready to come and set fire,” Siemonyak said.
