China, which will not participate in the Peace Summit on Ukraine, is lobbying other governments for its “peace plan.”
This was reported by Reuters with reference to 10 anonymous diplomats.
Beijing has not publicly criticized the June 15-16 peace summit in Switzerland, nor has it urged states not to attend, the sources said. However, at the same time, the PRC believes that the event will allegedly continue the war in Ukraine.
The news agency's interlocutors add that China told Western countries that many developing countries share this opinion.
It is noted that one diplomat called Beijing's actions a “hidden boycott” of the upcoming peace summit, as, according to sources, the country has stepped up its outreach efforts due to meetings with foreign officials and messages to foreign missions as the event approaches.
Diplomats say Chinese special envoy Li Hui visited Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates last month and met with representatives of developing countries at their embassies in Beijing.
Emphasis: When China explains its non-presence at the Peace Summit in Switzerland, it is trying to attract developing countries to an alternative “peace plan” containing 6 points. China presented it together with Brazil in May.
The proposal calls for an international peace conference “in due course, recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation by all parties, and a fair discussion of all peace plans,” Reuters adds.
