The most unusual cosmic phenomenon of the year – on April 8, a volcanic comet with horns spewing cryomagma will approach the Earth, and everyone will be able to see it.
“Next month, Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, known for its characteristic green glow, will approach Earth. It is a cryovolcanic comet. This means that it erupts from time to time when solar energy heats its interior and causes the release of a mixture of ice and gas known as cryomagma. The cryomagma expands into the comet's coma—a plume of gas around its core—making the celestial body much brighter over the next few days.
The infernal name of Comet Pons-Brooks is due to the fact that from time to time characteristic formations resembling horns grow on it. The comet's green light is caused by the high content of dicarbon in its coma and tail. If the comet begins to erupt shortly before approaching Earth, it will be visible from the planet's surface with the naked eye. However, scientists cannot yet say with certainty whether this will happen or not.
