China, which will not participate in the Ukraine Peace Summit, is lobbying other governments for its “peace plan.”
Reuters reports this, citing 10 anonymous diplomats.
According to the sources, Beijing has not openly criticized the peace summit to be held in Switzerland on June 15-16, nor has it urged countries not to attend. However, at the same time, China believes that the event will allegedly continue the war in Ukraine.
The news agency's sources added that China told Western countries that many developing countries share this opinion.
It is noted that one diplomat called Beijing's actions a "covert boycott" of the upcoming peace summit, as the country has stepped up its outreach efforts by meeting with foreign officials and communicating with foreign missions as the event approaches, according to sources.
Diplomats said Chinese special envoy Li Hui visited Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates last month and met with developing country representatives at their embassies in Beijing.
Emphasis: When China explains its absence from the Peace Summit in Switzerland, it is trying to attract developing countries to an alternative 6-point “peace plan” that China presented together with Brazil in May.
The proposal calls for an international peace conference "at an appropriate time, which both Russia and Ukraine accept, with equal participation of all parties, and an honest discussion of all peace plans," Reuters adds.
