Russian shelling in the eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk killed one person on Sunday, local authorities said, as Russian troops closed in on a key logistics hub.
“At about 11 a.m., the enemy fired on the western part of the city… Unfortunately, one person was killed,” the Pokrovsk military administration reported on Telegram.
The administration also said that earlier in the day Russia had fired artillery at a building near a gas station in the city, but gave no details of the damage.
According to the local administration, this happened against the backdrop of Russia having been advancing towards Pokrovsk for several months and, according to local authorities, has come within 10 kilometers (six miles) of its eastern outskirts.
More than 20,000 people have fled the city since August, and Russian strikes over the past two weeks have cut off water and electricity for many remaining residents.
The city sits at the crossroads of rail and road routes supplying Ukrainian troops and cities across the eastern front line, and has long been a target for Moscow's army.
Russian strikes earlier this week damaged two overpasses in the city, including one that connected Pokrovsk with the neighboring town of Mirnohrad, local media reported.
