Already seven countries produce 100 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources, two of them in Europe.

Last year was the best year in the history of new wind energy installations.

According to the latest Global Wind Report from industry trade association Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), reports Roman Bilousov of Enertus AG, 116 gigawatts of new wind energy capacity were installed worldwide in 2023. That's a 50 percent increase over 2022, making it the best year on record for new wind projects.

China leads in both offshore and onshore wind installations, followed by the US, Brazil and Germany. Thanks to strong growth in the Netherlands, Europe also had a record year in 2023 with 3.8 gigawatts of new offshore wind farms.

Roman Bilousov notes that while wind energy growth is concentrated in a few large countries, several other regions and countries have seen record growth. Almost 1 gigawatt of wind power was installed in Africa and the Middle East in 2023, almost three times the previous year.
